NEO is a genuine consumer proposition, but Early Access usefulness and full autonomy are not the same thing.

1X is taking a $200 refundable deposit, lists $20,000 ownership or a $499/month subscription, and states US deliveries begin in 2026. The company also says early owners receive foundational autonomy and can schedule Expert Mode for chores the robot does not yet know.

Hardware that matters at home

Vision, audio, connectivity and hands

These four areas have the biggest implications for what NEO can perceive, manipulate and transmit inside a home.

Vision

Dual stereo fisheye cameras with 8.85 MP sensors, giving RightRobot a concrete reason to treat privacy as a top-tier buying criterion.

Audio

Four beamforming microphones for voice interaction and monitoring — useful, but another reason the privacy section should be prominent rather than buried.

Connectivity

Wi‑Fi, Bluetooth and 5G support, plus remote app / VR control and scheduled Expert Mode. That combination is exactly why users need a simple explanation of autonomy vs remote help.

Hands

1X describes the new assembly as 25 DoF: 22 in the fingers/palm plus 3 at the wrist, and says it will ship on every NEO. The current product table lists Hands 22x2, apparently using a hand-only count, so RightRobot explains the counting convention rather than calling it a contradiction.

The most important distinction: autonomous vs human-assisted

A video of a humanoid completing laundry is not enough to tell you whether the task was autonomous, remotely guided, scripted, rehearsed or performed under unusually controlled conditions. RightRobot's long-term humanoid scoring should label evidence at task level: independently verified autonomous, manufacturer-demonstrated autonomous, human-assisted/teleoperated, manufacturer claimed, or unknown.

For NEO specifically, Expert Mode is not a hidden gotcha: 1X openly describes it. That transparency is useful, but consumers still need to know which everyday tasks are reliable without intervention.

Privacy deserves its own score

NEO's published hardware includes stereo cameras, microphones, Wi‑Fi, Bluetooth and 5G, and 1X describes remote mobile/VR control plus scheduled Expert Mode. That makes permissions, remote access, data handling and user control first-class buying criteria — not small-print extras.

Who should consider NEO now?

Early adopters who understand that they are buying into a rapidly evolving platform are the obvious fit. Anyone expecting a completely autonomous general housekeeper from day one should be much more cautious. The value equation is not simply whether NEO can perform a chore; it is how often, how reliably, how safely and with how much human or remote assistance.

Is 1X NEO fully autonomous?

1X says NEO arrives with basic autonomy for Early Access and grows in capability. For complex chores it does not know, owners can schedule Expert Mode, where a 1X Expert remotely supervises actions. RightRobot therefore scores autonomy task by task.

Is NEO teleoperated?

NEO supports remote control and Expert Mode, so human-assisted operation is part of the product model. That does not mean every NEO task is teleoperated; some manufacturer-documented demonstrations are explicitly autonomous. RightRobot labels the evidence rather than assuming either extreme.

Can NEO climb stairs?

1X has documented a Redwood AI mobility controller that goes up and down stairs using stereo vision. RightRobot currently treats this as manufacturer-documented AI mobility, not yet broad independent consumer proof across many homes.

Can NEO cook?

Do not use the well-known NEO Beta steak-cooking video as autonomous proof. 1X explicitly stated that showcase used teleoperation. Autonomous cooking remains a much higher bar.

What privacy hardware does NEO have?

1X currently publishes dual stereo fisheye cameras, four beamforming microphones, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and 5G, plus app monitoring/communication and remote-control capabilities. RightRobot treats privacy and remote access as a first-class buying criterion.

Has RightRobot physically tested NEO?
