LiDAR is usually excellent for fast, repeatable mapping and works without needing a brightly lit room. A top-mounted LiDAR turret can make a robot taller, though. Cameras and structured-light sensors can help recognise smaller objects such as cables, shoes and pet mess, but real-world avoidance varies a lot between models.

A basic self-empty dock mainly saves bin-emptying. More advanced docks can wash mop pads, dry them, refill clean water and sometimes dose detergent. Those extras can make ownership much more hands-off, but they also increase dock size, maintenance, consumables and price.

Simple drag pads are cheap and useful for light wiping. Spinning pads add active scrubbing. Roller systems can continuously refresh the cleaning surface and may handle wet mess more effectively. Carpet protection also matters: some robots lift, detach or shield their mop system when crossing rugs.

Pa is a useful suction-pressure specification, but floor pickup also depends on airflow, brush design, floor sealing, navigation, cleaning passes and how the robot handles different debris. Pet hair is a good example: strong suction helps, but the brushroll, anti-tangle design and air path can matter just as much.

Most modern robots can navigate walls and large furniture. The more useful test is whether they identify small, low or awkward objects before touching them. Loose charging cables, socks, toys and pet waste are much more demanding than simply mapping a room.
Will it physically work in your home?Height, thresholds, dock footprint and whole-home coverage.
A great cleaner can still be the wrong robot if it cannot get under your sofa, cross a raised threshold or fit its dock where you need it. Robot height, threshold capability, dock dimensions and the ability to cover a larger home can therefore matter more than headline suction figures.
What if my home has more than one floor?Multi-floor maps help — but the robot still cannot climb the stairs.
A robot vacuum cannot move itself between storeys. Many models can remember more than one floor map, so you can carry the robot upstairs and let it recognise that level, but the dock normally stays on one floor. That means self-emptying, mop washing, water refill and charging are only fully automatic where the dock is available.
